Exploring Stockholm

Welcome to Stockholm, a city of beautiful architecture, stunning waterways, and of course, meatballs! While your days will already be filled with the awe that comes along with attending a congress dedicated to IO, there’s plenty of sightseeing to be done outside of congress hours. Here are some suggestions to make the most out of your visit:

First up, take a stroll through Gamla Stan, the charming old town of Stockholm. With its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and medieval architecture, this is the perfect place to escape from your colleagues after a long day of meetings. Be sure to visit Stortorget, the main square, and marvel at the iconic 17th-century buildings that surround it.

What trip to Stockholm would be complete the iconic ABBA Museum: a full museum dedicated entirely to Sweden’s most beloved pop group. From the flashy costumes to the disco ball, this museum is a tribute to all things ABBA. Well worth the after-congress sprint (the museum is only open until 18:00!) you’ll leave with their catchy tunes stuck in your head and a newfound appreciation for sequins.

If you’re looking for a more educational experience, the Nobel Prize Museum is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the city, this museum showcases the groundbreaking achievements of Nobel laureates throughout history. You’ll get a chance to learn about the groundbreaking scientific, literary, and humanitarian achievements of these esteemed individuals, all while exploring the beautiful exhibits and interactive displays. If you’re arriving a day early for the congress, take advantage of the long Friday opening hours and browse until 21:00!

Animal lovers won’t want to miss the Skansen Open-Air Museum. This museum is home to over 150 species of Scandinavian animals, from brown bears to reindeer. But the real highlight is the chance to see the resident baby animals, from fluffy little lambs to tiny piglets.

For those of you who want to soak up some Swedish culture, head to the Vasa Museum. This museum is home to the world’s only intact 17th-century ship, the Vasa, which sunk on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was rediscovered in the 1960s. You’ll be able to marvel at the impressive craftsmanship of this magnificent ship and learn about its fascinating history. It’s open late on Wednesdays – a great way to round out your time in Stockholm!

Finally, if you’re in the mood for some stunning views or you can’t pick just one thing to see, take a boat tour of Stockholm’s archipelago. You’ll get a chance to see the beautiful scenery of the city’s many islands and waterways, all while enjoying a relaxing evening on the water.
