Cryoablation for breast cancer treatment
Cryoablation for the treatment of early-stage T1a breast cancer is gaining increasing importance for patients who are HR-positive, HER2-negative with tumours of up to 50mm, offering an alternative to surgical resection. With the ICE3 and FROST trials showing high survival rates, and stage 1 breast cancer representing almost 50% of all diagnosed breast cancer patients, cryoablation for breast cancer is something every interventional radiologist should offer.

Bone thermal ablation
Thermal ablation is commonly used in the treatment of bone tumours. In addition to achieving results comparable to SBRT, IRs can carry out biopsies and bone consolidation together with ablation in the same session. Level II evidence supports radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of painful osseous metastases and has shown success in the management of painful osseous lesions through cryoablation.

Lung thermal ablation
In addition to SBRT and surgery, ablation has become an important tool to treat lung tumours, both in the primary and secondary setting, especially for non-operable patients with limited lung function. In the oligometastatic setting of many cancer types, evidence even supports ablation at the same level as SBRT and surgery. ECIO 2026 covered lung ablation throughout various sessions.
