Communication workshops

ECIO will host two special workshops dedicated to effective communication in interventional radiology and interventional oncology, focusing on how physicians can develop better skills to enhance communication with patients and other healthcare teams.

These unique workshops are free of charge with ECIO registration, but spaces are limited—so be sure to arrive on time!

Workshop I: Mastering communication in patient care

Monday, April 27, 10:30-12:00

Coordinators: Irene Bargellini (Turin/IT), Inger Keussen (Stockholm/SE)

Communication is of paramount importance in healthcare. This includes communication with patients and caregivers, the transfer of critical information, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.

In this interactive session, we will explore how clear and compassionate communication fosters trust, strengthens healthcare teams, and improves patient outcomes. We will discuss common challenges, explore strategies for improvement, and share experiences that highlight the vital role of communication in delivering safe, high-quality care.

Join us for this session to learn practical tips and techniques to enhance your communication skills.

Learning objectives

  • Recognize the challenges and limitations of verbal communication in clinical practice.
  • Integrate key principles of effective communication into daily patient care.
  • Adapt communication approaches when working with paediatric patients, as well as individuals with disabilities or frailty.
  • Address and manage cultural barriers to ensure inclusive and respectful interactions.

Workshop II: Collaborative decisions that count – enhancing MDT effectiveness

Monday, April 27, 15:00-16:30

Coordinators: Irene Bargellini (Turin/IT), Inger Keussen (Stockholm/SE)

Multidisciplinary tumour boards are a cornerstone of clinical decision-making, enabling individualized treatment planning for patients. The full impact of interventional radiology is realized when its expertise is integrated within these teams, united by the shared goal of optimizing patient outcomes. The clarity of interventional radiologists’ communication is critical to ensuring that findings and their implications for diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis are fully understood.

Interventional radiology plays a multifaceted role in multidisciplinary tumour boards: interpreting imaging studies, recommending interventional options, and resolving diagnostic uncertainties. However, communication challenges, including differences in vocabulary, approaches, and priorities, can arise and affect collaboration. This workshop equips participants with practical skills, strategies, and insights to enhance interaction and collaboration in complex healthcare settings. Designed for those who regularly participate in or plan to join MDTs, it combines interactive exercises with expert-led lectures.

Learning objectives

  • Differentiate between individual and group decision-making processes in clinical contexts.
  • Critically appraise the biases and limitations that may influence MDT discussions, including factors such as emotions and uncertainty.
  • Implement practical strategies to manage complex MDT decision-making.
  • Integrate key principles to enhance the quality and consistency of MDT outcomes.
