Interventional oncology hackathon

Bridging clinical needs and technology to transform cancer treatment

Organised by CIRSE’s Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee, the ECIO 2026 Interventional Oncology Hackathon brings together artificial intelligence groups from various European institutions develop data-driven solutions addressing real-world challenges in interventional oncology.

Held alongside ECIO 2026, this multi-day hybrid hackathon focuses on algorithm development using curated synthetic and real-world datasets in the field of transarterial radioembolization (TARE). Participanting teams will work to translate clinical needs into practical, high-impact AI tools that support decision-making, optimize workflows, and improve patient outcomes.

 Why participate?

  • Work with clinically relevant, structured datasets specifically designed for interventional oncology
  • Collaborate with leading experts and mentors from clinical and technical backgrounds
  • Develop solutions with a clear pathway to validation, presentation, and publication
  • Gain visibility at CIRSE 2026, including final presentations and invited peer-reviewed publications

Hackathon focus areas

Participanting teams will develop algorithms addressing key challenges across the TARE treatment pathway, including:

Decision support tools

  • Prediction of severe adverse events using clinical, procedural, and laboratory data
  • Identification of optimal candidates for segmental ablation versus full-lobe TARE

Workflow optimization

  • Automated classification of adverse events and concomitant therapies using NLP-based analysis of free-text fields

Outcome forecasting

  • Recurrence risk and survival prediction based on staging scores and clinical history
  • Prediction of post-TARE resectability

 Post-hackathon opportunities

Finalist teams will:

  • Present their projects at CIRSE 2026
  • Be invited to submit a manuscript to CVIR or CVIR Oncology

The organization and conduct of the ECIO 2026 Interventional Oncology Hackathon are supported and managed by CIRSE’s CRO, Next Research, ensuring a robust scientific, regulatory, and operational framework.
